Description: You are bidding on a large, very rare original antique print from an 1880s French illustrated journal. It depicts a marabou stork (Leptoptilos crumenifer) taking on a pack of Hyena Hyaena that have just killed a cow. I believe they are the Brown Hyena.Included with the print is a second page that has a 17-inch article about the Marabou. The article is in French, but getting free translations on the computer are easy these days. This stork is a massive wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae. It breeds in Africa south of the Sahara, in both wet and arid habitats, often near human habitation, especially waste tips. It is sometimes called the "undertaker bird" due to its shape from behind: cloak-like wings and back, skinny white legs, and sometimes a large white mass of "hair". It was highly prized for its the downy feathers which were used for trimming fashionable clothing. The caption reads: Les Maraboutwhich roughly translates to: The marabouIt is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 10.5 x 14.5 inches (26.5 x 36.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a French caption below. The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
