Description: "I Am A Cat: A Novel" is a 431 page, 6"x8.5" hardcover written by Soseki Natsume and published by Kenkyusha (Tokyo). This English translation by Katsue Shibata and Motonari Kai first appeared in January 1961; this is a June 1971 printing. In very good condition. The dust jacket is protected by a semi-transparent sleeve (as issued, we believe) but has a couple small tears at back top. The spine appears to have browned but this is more to the sleeve than the jacket. The tan cloth boards show minimal wear. There's a small mark to the back pastedown. The binding is tight. A laid-in newspaper clipping about the author has browned the front pastedown and ffep. Synopsis:Written from 1904 through 1906, Soseki Natsume's comic masterpiece, I Am a Cat, satirizes the foolishness of upper-middle-class Japanese society during the Meiji era. With acerbic wit and sardonic perspective, it follows the whimsical adventures of a world-weary stray kitten who comments on the follies and foibles of the people around him.A classic of Japanese literature, I Am a Cat is one of Soseki's best-known novels. Considered by many as the most significant writer in modern Japanese history, Soseki's I Am a Cat is a classic novel sure to be enjoyed for years to come.
