Printed by Seri-Arts, New York. Published by Encounter, New York. Here is the issue. In order to fit it in a frame, the original owner cut off the white borders that contained the signature and the number. We do guarantee, however, that this is from the first edition in 1973. Originally, it was hand signed by Robert Indiana on the right bottom and numbered on the left bottom. We purchased four pieces by this artist from the same estate, all signed and numbered, with the exception of this one, which was cut down. This is an early piece. They were reproduced in 1996 and the cheapest we can find one is $16,000. The 1973 version is certainly more valuable. Overall in excellent condition. There are some very minor bends and small tears primarily along the left edge. There is one horizontal small crease in the lower left corner, appx. 2" wide. A few minor scuffs. The overall coverage of the color is solid, and does not show any kinks, bends or losses. All of the colors are vibrant and in their original state. It measures 30" X 30". One of the central figures of the Pop Art movement, Robert Indiana takes his inspiration from commercial signs, claiming: There are more signs than trees in America. There are more signs than leaves. So I think of myself as a painter of American landscape. In his paintings, sculptures, and prints, he mimics and re-arranges the words and numbers of a myriad of signs, including the Phillips 66 gas station logo and the Yield traffic sign. He is most famous for his Love paintings and sculptures, first produced in the 1960s. Creating a block out of the wordwith the L and the O set atop the V and the EIndiana has effectively inserted his own sign into the mix. His Love painting was reproduced on a postage stamp in 1973; his Love sculptures are installed in public spaces worldwide. Shipping is FREE in the Continental USA.
