Description: Igiri Tree, (Chinese Wonder) Idesia polycarpa, Tree Seeds Fast Growth, Hardy and Easy to Grow, Showy Fragrant Flowers, Edible Fruits, Attracts Birds, Wildlife Food/Shelter, Multi-Season Interest, Shade Tree, Street Tree, Cold, Heat, Drought and Wind Tolerant, Bonsai The Igiri Tree, as it is known in Japan, is a very fast growing, horizontally branched, broad pyramidal, deciduous shade tree. This spectacular tree should be much more widely used as a landscape tree in eastern North America. The Igiri Tree is dioecious (separate male and female trees), reaching 30 to 50 feet in height. Its heart-shaped leaves are very large and tropical looking . The foliage is bronze purple at first, turning glossy deep green above and blue-white beneath during summer, persisting very late into the fall though usually remaining green until falling. The attractive foliage is borne on red stalks. The bark is also very attractive, smooth and very light gray like the American Beech. Yellow-green fragrant flowers appear in April and May on panicles up to 12 inches in length, with male (staminate) flowers slightly larger than female (pistillate) flowers. Stunning 1/4 to 1/2 inch berries follow in October and November, turning from purple-red to orange-red, adorning the female trees in clusters resembling loose bunches of grapes, drying to black with age. The Igiri Tree is a plant possessing some of the best multi-season interest of any tree and yet it is hardly ever encountered. This medium-sized tree is one of the most prolific berry-producers in existence. The fruits are not only produced copiously but they are a very eye-catching scarlet that stands out dramatically against clear, blue winter skies. The berries of the Igiri Tree are most spectacular after snowfall. Not only are the berries attractive but they are edible as well. They ripen to a dark purple and are a true blessing to wildlife. Some songbirds like the berries while others don't, so the persistence of the berry crop may vary from year to year depending on bird populations. If you enjoy bird watching, this tree will likely draw interesting birds to your yard. The Igiri Tree is very easy to grow. It is wind tolerant even in coastal areas and is virtually immune to insect pests and disease. Pruning is generally for shaping only or limbing up for clearance, otherwise, it is rarely needed. It is easy to transplant while dormant. Idesia is a genus of flowering plants in the Willow family Salicaceae, comprising the single species Idesia polycarpa. It is native to Eastern Asia and is popular as an ornamental.
