APPENDIX TIMETABLESPage 127 Introduction The picturesque but isolated North Devon resort of Ilfracombe became a favourite holiday destination in Victorian times. The Ilfracombe Gazette included in its weekly pages lists of guests residing at each of the town's hotels, in an age when rank, status and knowing the right people was a social imperative. Guests arrived by road, steamer and railway and there was great competition, particularly for the prestigious first class traffic. Both the South Western and Great Western Railways opened offices in the town years before their trains arrived and the Midland advertised services to and from its system via Bristol, Portishead and a connecting steamer service.
