Impromptu Magic with Patter

Description: While magic tricks are not often considered a sales tool the introduction of this book states, “The Commercial Traveler, the Book Agent, the Insurance Solicitor, in fact any man who finds it difficult to interest a “prospect”, will find many things in this book that will help to land a sale or secure an order. For the first principle in dealing with another is to gain attention and arouse interest. Nothing will accomplish this end quicker than will an impromptu trick, done with seeming unconsciousness of having done anything. Many books and booklets on patter, numerous works, little and big, on magic have been published. But not until this work by DeLawrence has then been one that covered both, and with material that anyone of reasonable intelligence could use successfully and satisfactorily.” Possibly magic and patter can make a 21st century comeback. Condition: Light tan paper boards with a two-tone pastedown to front board, and paper title block label to spine with title, price, and author visible and readable. Both paste downs show age related discoloration. Boards and spine in very good condition with only minor wrinkles to top of the back strip and sun fading to rear board. Corners are sharp with no wear. The spine is straight, tight and hinges are sound with no cracking to the endpapers. Text block is solid and all pages firmly attached. Age tanning throughout. Previous owner name on front free endpaper and book seller label on title page. All internal pages are clean, with no tears, cracks, or other previous owner marks. 80 pages plus three pages of advertising. Dimensions: H – 7-1/4” W – 4-3/4”. George DeLawrence (1886 – 1928) was the stage name for George L. Silver, who from 1919 to 1922 was the author of six books about magic with this book being his last publication. A Lyceum magician and cardman, during the day he was a chief clerk in on the Government departments in Chicago and later a salesman, but during the evenings he performed in clubs, wrote articles for magic magazines, had a mail-order business and was an author. His favorite trick was the Twentieth Century Silks. After suffering with tuberculosis, he died from a hemorrhage at a relatively young age.
