The album was released on 17 September 1975 and provided the bands big breakthrough in Japan. Besides Klaus Meine, Uli Jon Roth can also be heard as a singer on the songs Dark Lady and Sun in My Hand, which he wrote himself. Besides the eponymous hit In Trance, the album contains Night Lights, the bands first purely instrumental piece composed by Uli Jon Roth. The legendary artwork of In Trance was created by photographer Michael von Gimbut.
