This original artwork is based on the Celtic art, myths and legends of Ireland. EMER, WIFE OF CÚ CHULAINN: Emer, daughter of Forgall the Foreigner became wife of Cú Chulainn when, after her father refused her hand in marriage, he attacked his fortress and carried away his daughter Emer, her foster sisters and their weight in gold and silver. BÓANN THE COW GODDESS: This depiction of the legendary Bóann (She of the White Cattle) is my first attempt at the subject and shows her as the cow goddess, a symbol of fertility and wealth. It was Bóann who set in train the search for the beautiful girl seen in a vision by her son, the poet warrior, Aongus Óg. This tale inspired W.B.Yeats wonderful poem’ The Dream of Aengus’. SIONNA THE FOX GODDESS: I first heard the story of the fox goddess from a story-teller in my mother’s home county, County Clare, in the west of Ireland. I have been fascinated by these beautiful and now protected creatures since I first saw one when I was a kid. They were rare as hen’s teeth when I was young and hunted almost to extinction for their beautiful fur but today they are everywhere and I see them whenever I’m on my way home from a late night on the town. Sionna is the eponymous goddess of the fox tribe, their protector and guardian. SIOCHRA THE SNOW FAERIE ÁINE. 1975: Áine, or Ánu, was a beautiful goddess of the legendary Tuatha Dé Danann and was worshipped as a fertility goddess by the Celtic tribes of Ancient Ireland.
