Maimonides is acknowledged to be one of the foremost philosophers in Jewish history, whose works and views are considered a cornerstone of Jewish thought and study. Maimonides' full name was Moshe ben Maimon, and in Israel he is almost always referred to by the Hebrew acronym of his title and name, "Rambam" (Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon). Outside Israel he is widely known by his Greek name, Moses Maimonides. A passage from the manuscript of one of his most famous scholarly works, "Mishneh Tora" (Code of Jewish Law), forms the background of the banknote's obverse.
