In September 1957 Basilio won the middleweight championship of the world by beating Sugar Ray Robinson in one of the most exciting fifteen round decisions in middleweight boxing history. Basilio and Robinson met in a rematch on 26 March 1958 and Robinson barely regained the title after a fifteen round controversial decision. Basilio's left eye was totally swelled shut from the 6th round onwards, and many of the ringside press still thought that Basilio had won this second fight. The Associated Press image showing Basilio with swollen left eye carried the caption, 'closed peeper, but no weeper'.
