Description: Italy: Medal for the Fiume Expedition 1919. Scarce original gilt bronze medal awarded to the volunteer “legionaires” that joined soldier-poet Gabriele D’Annunzio (pictured) in his illegal occupation of the city of Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia) in September 1919. The city had an ethnic Italian majority, and Italy expected to annex the city as part of the Paris Peace Conference. When that didn’t happen, D’Annunzio decided to seize the city himself; he evacuated the city in December 1920 only after an Italian battleship bombarded the city. The medal was created by Royal Decree in January 1926 and initially awarded only to M.V.S.N. (Black Shirt) members (see Bini, Dimitri. Official Military and Civilian Medals of the Kingdom of Italy (2008) p. 156). The medal is in near extremely fine condition, with some of the original gilt gone; otherwise it is in extremely fine condition; on the original ribbon, which colors were the same as the Fiume flag. There are reproductions of this medal being sold; this is an original. Authenticity guaranteed; 14-day return privilege (30 days overseas), excluding postage, provided item is returned in same condition when sold. Items will be shipped USPS Priority Mail; will combine postage for multiple purchases.
