Description: When Ian Fleming died in 1964, James Bond went into literary retirement for four years, until 1968 when Kingsley Amis (writing as Robert Markham) published Colonel Sun, the first post-Fleming Bond novel. After Colonel Sun, Bond went back onto hiatus until thirteen years later when, in 1981, License Renewed was published, written by John Gardner. With that, Bond was off to the races -- between 1981 and 1996, Gardner would publish 15 more Bond novels. Since then, Bond books have been in pretty much continuous publication. Colonel Sun is an 11th printing of the Bantam paperback; License Renewed is the thirteenth Berkley printing. So this set of books represents a pretty important period for Bond -- these two novels are the bridge between the original Fleming Bond and the modern character.
