The first eight issues of this compact radical political and literary magazine, which debuted in the crucible month of May, 1968, and discussed the ever-increasing tensions in Northern Ireland between the Catholic majority and the Protestant power structure. Seamus Heaney, whose first regularly published voulme of poetry ("Death of a Naturalist") had been published just two years earlier in 1966, had some of his earliest work published in this magazine, with contributions in issues 2, 6, and 8. (He is also mentioned in issue 1 on the rear wrap, where he is congratulated for "gaining the Somerset Maugham award.") Though neatly presented compared to a number of underground magazines of the day, there is certainly a "rough and ready" quality to the publication, with a number of slightly mis-aligned letters, and some hastily folded sheets, with slight offsetting to their opposite leaves; all evocative of the "of-the-moment" nature of the publication, which was steeped in the hopeful and radical politics of its day.
