Description: Japanese timber chisel (tataki nomi) made using traditional blacksmithing methods by a maker in the Echigo Sanjo region. New old stock with red oak handles. The registered trademark brand is Yoshimasa. Overall length is about 12.25”. Width - 18mm These are made at the Motomiya Chisel Factory (有限会社本宮鑿製作所) in the Echigo Sanjo region by the traditional craftsman Takamasa Toriyama (or Katsumasa Karasuyama) that produced chisels (20+ years ago) under this trademark. While new, these are old stock. How old? Well old enough that the adhesive on the brand stickers is failing - so maybe 20-30 years. Why am I selling? Well I thought they were bench chisels (~9” long) but these are timber chisels (~12” long). They look to be high quality due to file shaping of the neck and transition of the handle to the neck and wrapping of the hard steel layer to the softer backing steel. They have not been sharpened as the bevel has not been honed to a sharp edge and the hoops have not been set. The tool also has a thin coating of lacquer to inhibit rust but underneath is a black forge finish. Update: sharpened a 12mm chisel of the same brand and compared against 10 other chisels in a blog post at www.dkdesignwv.com these were one of the best.
