Description: An excellent supplement for the late elementary to early intermediate piano student, Jazz Piano Projects introduces concepts not usually included in traditional studies. Ear training, a 'must' when playing jazz, is stressed as this unique volume incorporates the "experience before the symbol" approach. An extensive glossary gives both the student and teacher not only a valuable reference, but a starting place for further exploration into the fabulous world of jazz music! This book is structured as PROJECTS to be undertaken as time permits and as needs and interests dictate. It includes the concepts and skills outlined in the Pre-Jazz Level of the MTNA Jazz Studies Guide. An interested, hard-working student using Jazz Piano Projects as a primary focus of study could likely complete a project per week. Most students will work on each project for a few weeks, until the concepts and skills included are mastered. The materials of this book may be used with elementary school students who can read and play at Late Elementary or Early Intermediate levels. It is assumed that students are developing music reading and piano playing skills through study of traditional materials. Therefore, Jazz Piano Projects treats as new only those concepts and skills that are not consistently included in traditional study, as well as those that are particularly inherent to jazz piano playing. To gain the greatest ear-training benefit, the INTRODUCTORY TUNE in each project can be taught by ear one or two weeks before the concepts of that project are to be presented. This approach follows "experience before the symbol" presentation pedagogy. (For example: the student experiences playing and hearing major triads before being introduced to the symbol that represents a major triad.) The EXPLORATIONS that follow each introductory tune provide additional experiences in ear-training, improvisation, chord voicing, and listening. Within each exploration area several specific assignments are listed. Teachers should select those explorations and assignments most appropriate to the individual student. The TEACHER APPENDIX in the back of the book gives the teacher many examples to use as resource or reference. The PROGRESS RECORD form will help both teacher and student be aware of which skills have been mastered and which need further attention. New terms first appear in italics, which indicates that they are defined in the GLOSSARY. Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
