Description: This is a supremely delicate etched copy of Jean Honoré Fragonard’s 1778 etching of an interior showing a couple and a small child. This was created by etching a photo of the impression at the Bibliothèque National into a copper plate to recreate in three dimensions Fragonard's original etched plate. It was then inked, wiped, and printed on an intaglio press exactly as Fragonard did almost 250 years ago. An awesome recreation, virtually indistinguishable from the original. One of only 40 impressions printed on vèlin de Madagascar in 1928. Outstanding condition after almost a century. Platemark: 10 x 7.75 inches; sheet: 13.75 x 10.8 inches. Safely shipped in archival glassine in a rigid mailer. Thank you for looking at my lot. I hope you’ll consider checking out my other listings, and enjoy your day. The Metropolitan Museum: “Embodying the freedom and curiosity of the French Enlightenment, Jean Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) developed an exuberant and fluid manner as a painter, draftsman, and printmaker. Prolific and inventive, he abandoned early on the conventional career path dictated by the hierarchical structure of the Royal Academy, working largely for private patrons. His work constitutes a further elaboration of the Rococo idiom established by Antoine Watteau and François Boucher, a manner perfectly suited to his subjects, which favored the playful, the erotic, and the joys of domesticity.”
