JEANETTE MacDONALD - DOCUMENT SIGNED 02/01/1956 - HFSID 264597 JEANETTE MACDONALD Partly Printed DS: "Jeanette MacDonald" on last page, 4 pages, 8x10 with two riders, each 8x7, one initialed "JM". Beverly Hills, California, 1956 February 10. Standard AFTRA Exclusive Agent contract whereby MacDonald hires the William Morris Agency to represent her in all dealings with the broadcast industries for a period of one year beginning February 10, 1956. Also signed by a representative of the William Morris Agency, Inc. Singer/actress Jeanette MacDonald (1903-1965) is perhaps best known for the eight musicals she made with Nelson Eddy, beginning with Naughty Marietta in 1935. A self-taught soprano, MacDonald had debuted in films in The Love Parade (1929) opposite Maurice Chevalier. The two stars clashed so frequently offstage that they would not make another film together after 1934's The Merry Widow. After the MacDonald-Eddy team split in 1942, MacDonald concentrated on becoming a bona fide opera star, debuting in Montreal in Romeo and Juliet in 1943. When she failed to impress critics, MacDonald returned to acting. By the time she signed this contract, MacDonald was already taking it easy due to a weakening heart. She had appeared in her last film, The Sun Comes Up, in 1949. On March 28, 1957, less than two months after this contract expired, she was seen on the small screen as Donna Lucia d'Alvadores in "Charlie's Aunt", an episode of Playhouse 90. Lightly creased. x-inch paper loss at lower left corner of first page, staple holes at upper left corners. Overall, fine condition.
