Description: For auction is a lovely table lamp made by The Jefferson Lamp Company of Follansbee, West Virginia. The lamp is known as a "Scenic Reverse Painted” table lamp". The lamp stands 23" tall to the top of the finial and the shade is 18 1/8" in diameter. The foot of the lamp base has a diameter of 7 7/8”. The glass blank has a glue chip texture and you can feel it when you run your finger across it. The reverse painted shade depicts a beautiful lakeside scene with the sky and clouds in the backdrop. This all takes place in the morning because there is the sun rising with its reflection on the water. This is a continual scenic as it flows into a beautiful field scene with trees and part of the large lake in the background as you turn the shade on the base counter clockwise. It is a beautiful table lamp and one of the finest scenic Jefferson’s I have ever owned. The lamp base is a 2 light with tassel style pull chain ends. The base has a gold applied patina and shows some wear. The shade is considered to be in excellent original condition as it has no post factory nicks, chips or dings. There are 2 factory blank grinding chips on the bottom of the shade and these are painted and it was done at the time of making and considered factory and these are pictured. The base is in very good condition but it has a indent in the outer bottom edge on one side and a very small piece of metal is missing. It must have been dropped at one time without the shade attached. This is pictured and considered insignificant. The patina on the base and heat cap shows normal wear as there are many pictures to see. The lamp still retains its original wiring and has been tested and works wonderful. The lamp base is not signed but I have had many Jefferson Lamps through the years. The ball cluster, heat cap and finial are 100% original to the lamp. In fact this lamp is being sold as it was bought when made as even the wiring is original. The shade is signed as it reads " 1898 Jefferson L " painted on the inside bottom edge. This shade lifts on and off the lamp very much like their contemporary of the day Handel Lamp Company of Meriden Connecticut. Later on Handel moved to New York City. I would think that Jefferson copied Handel's technique as Handel was producing reverse painted lamps earlier than Jefferson. This was a wonderful way to mount the reverse painted lamps and many survived because of that. Pittsburgh and Pairpoint reverse painted lamps were hard mounted in that the cap was put on top of the Glass and then the finial tightened it down to the base. If it was tightened to tight when the shade got hot from the light bulbs and expanded the shade would crack. This cap and ring allowed for Jefferson and Handel Lamps to survive many more years than their contemporaries. The Jefferson Lamp Company was first established in 1900 in Steubenville, Ohio. This was a renown area for glass making. The company moved across the river to Follansbee, West Virginia in 1907. The Company went bankrupt in 1933. It was in West Virginia that they produced their Reverse Painted lamps. Here is a chance to own a fine piece of early American Lighting for a lot less than a Handel lamp of similar quality. I believe this lamp was made circa 1910-1925. To understand Reverse Painted Lamps means exactly as it sounds, “Reverse Painted” on the inside. When one learns how to paint on oil or board they are taught to paint the background and then go to the foreground. When you paint on glass blanks for lighting it was the reverse of this. One would have to paint the foreground and then go to the background. This was simply because when the light was on you would be looking through the glass and the foreground is the first thing you see. You can take the most gifted Artist and they can't paint in this method as it is extremely difficult to do. I have many more pictures of shade and base should you need you see more. THIS LAMP WILL BE SHIPPED IN 2 SEPARATE BOXES We are professional shippers. This item will be double boxed using Styrofoam sheets to form a casket around the shade and put the base in a separate box. This gives added protection for the shade but raises the cost for shipping. I also put insurance on each box for the total sale of the lamp. This way if either one is damaged or lost the entire amount is covered, even if 1 of the 2 boxes arrive. This raises the cost but is well worth the coverage. PLEASE READ BELOW I want to apologize for slowing down my shipping time. Ebay forced me into managed payments in July 2020. I used to get my money in 24 hours. I now get it in 3-4 business days. I was told it would be better for me and my fees would go down. This has been the opposite as my fees have actually increased and now it takes longer for me to receive the payments. Because of this slowdown I will not ship until the payment has made it into my bank account. No store lets you out of the building with the merchandise unless it is paid for. They are also now charging all sellers a commission of 12.35% on sales tax. Pay Pal used to charge 2.9% payment processing fee but Ebay has changed this to 12.35%. This is an increase of 9.45% on the sales tax portion. They are now making a profit on the sales tax and treating it as a sale which in my eyes is wrong!! They did the same on the shipping charges several years ago. They use to not charge anything and now they are charging 12.35% commission on shipping as well. This has raised the cost to ship items to you, the buyer and this is factored into my shipping charges. If you feel what Ebay is doing is wrong or you don't agree them please contact Ebay and voice your opinion. Maybe if enough of you do this, they will change their policy.
