Jido (Grandfather in Syrian) Jack [or Ya’oub] is up everyday at 2AM reading, reflecting and writing about his 93 years of experience and study. His acumen and wit is as sharp as any college professor and enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great (and another great) grand nephews, nieces and their friends as well. If you speak good Arabic, we can hook you up! Part 3: Jack’s Family Adventures Ali & Mila (Jido’s parents) along with 3 children Sami, Ya’oub(Jack) and Margha were traveling in San Francisco in Dec. 1941. Unfortunately, Jemila’s boyfriend did not look kindly to her “vagabond” family with no room to house them and little food to share. Ali ventured into Downtown & nearby towns to find any gainful employment or business opportunity. Being that most young males were conscripted into the armed forces, the economy and outlook was very bleak. How could he feed his needy family? One cold day a flyer hit Ali in the face with the name of a Japanese novelty store in Oakland. Ali Ventured to the abode and found the store abandoned (probably the owners were summarily stationed to detention camp.) The landlord saw Ali and inquired as to the purpose of his loitering. Ali quickly and loudly said in broken English “need storrrr for rent!” The owner of the building sensed Ali’s state of distress and said- come up with $20 down and $10 cash each day (not really believing that Ali could do so) and you got the store for the remainder of the winter season. Even though that was a lot of money, it represented at least 70% off of normal rental rate. The landlord figured he’d try to grab any tenant versus leaving the building fallow. Needless to say after beseeching Jamila, Mila’s extended family and many helpful friends, Ali was able to support the rental cost for the 1941-2 winter season. During the XMAS break, many military personnel came in to purchase oriental made items for purposes of gift exchange. After all expenses and full payment of loans, Ali was in the black by THOUSANDS of dollars- enough to buy a small house in those days! >>You’ll find more of this history in other listings.
