Everyone is familiar with Woodstock, the most famous music festival in history, with acts including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead, Crosby Stills Nash & Young and many, many others. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in music history. The historic 1969 concert festival came to stand for an era, with the famous dove on the guitar neck poster an icon of an age, one of the most recognizable images in the world. And it was an accident. The producers of the Woodstock Festival had originally planned to hold it in Wallkill, NY and first commissioned the great poster artist David Byrd to create this poster to advertise the event. Shortly after this wonderful poster was printed, the permit was revoked by the town of Wallkill. As a result the promoters scrambled to move the event to Bethel, NY. Because Byrd was on vacation where the promoters could not reach him to revise his poster, the promoters hurriedly enlisted Arnold Skolnick to design a new poster as soon as the contract was signed with Max Yasgur to hold the concert on his dairy farm in Bethel ... and the rest is, as they say, history. This is a beautiful image, one of my favorite poster designs. Byrd used an Aquarius the Water Bearer focal point surrounded by ornate, intricate nouveau florals and imagery. A fantastic historic poster, the original design for the greatest rock event in history. This wonderful high quality lithograph reproduction measures approx. 13 x 19" and is in mint condition.
