Description: Combining the information on the record labels with the information on the sleeve, I believe these two single-sided 12-inch 33 RPM LP's represent the earliest form of test pressing of the British stereo release of the two-sided LP "The Music Man" by Jimmy Giuffre and his Music Men, which was originally released in the US on the Atlantic label. Let's break that down. The anti-static sleeve, first of all, is printed on one side only, and. although it states "Made in England", it does not identify the record label. I'll get back to the handwritten inscriptions later, as well as the little sealing strip across the opening. The labels also both say "Made in England" across the top, followed by "Factory Sample - Not for Sale" and a notice that reads: "This pressing is not necessarily representative of the finished record and must not be used for review purposes." So, if it's not a review copy, I'm assuming the term "Factory Sample" means the recording equivalent of a publisher's "proof", to be circulated privately for the review and approval of those responsible for creating the work (the author and editors in the case of a book, or the musicians and recording crew in the case of a record). In other words, a very limited pressing. And the last word printed on the top half of the labels is "Stereo." Moving down to the lower half of the label, the label for side one has the following stamped or printed on (in four lines, with "---" indicating a new line): "AMZ 1860-2L SAHK 6150 --- The Music Man --- J. Guffre (sic) & His --- Music Men." And the side two label, all handwritten this time (in three lines): "AMZ 1861-2D SAHK 6150 --- The Music Man --- J. Guiffre (sic) & His Music Men." Looking closer at the numbers on the top line, I'm guessing "SAHK 6150" was the intended catalog number, which I believe matches the numbering system for stereo LP's on the London label (which was responsible for releasing Atlantic and many other US recordings in the UK). The other numbers (AMZ 1860-2L and AMZ 1861-2D) must therefore be the matrix numbers, which are also stamped respectively into the dead wax. Moving back to the sleeve (which does look like a generic London sleeve, now that you mention it), the printed side has a small sticker at the upper right with the number "AMZ 1860-2L", indicating perhaps that each record originally came in its own sleeve. Also, the title "Jimmy Giuffre - The Music Man" is handwritten at the upper left corner, along with the remark "OK - Passed Dash", possibly signifying the approval of someone involved in the review process. Oh, and the paper strip used to seal the opening is headed "Sample Record (Not for Sale)" and it contains a "Warning" that you'll be breaking the law ("Copyright Act, 1956") if you offer it for sale. Yikes, am I in trouble! Oh, and speaking of which, the unprinted side of the sleeve appears to represent someone else's previous attempts to offer the record for sale. Handwritten in large letters is the inscription "Jimmy Giuffre - The Music Man (Jazz) - 25c." So that's it in the proverbial nutshell. Like I said, the two sides are not pressed back to back, but each side has its own single-sided record, the reverse sides of which are shown in the last picture, labeled in light blue with a printed capital "T" motif. The reverse sides are grooved, but they play only a monotone throughout (yes, I had to try it). The records both look to be in about VG to VG+ condition, still nice and shiny, but with a few light surface scuffs and scratches. They play through fine on my Audio-Technica turntable, with no skips or jumps, and mostly just lightly audible background noise, but a few scattered pops and clicks and passages of ticking (especially during the quieter parts). Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well it will play on your equipment. International Buyers – Please Note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying. Customs fees are normally charged by the shipping company or collected when you pick the item up. These fees are not additional shipping charges. We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws. COMBINED SHIPPING: See our seller list for other interesting and unusual items, in fact bid on several and you might save on shipping and handling. If you buy multiple items, and if it's feasible and cost-effective for us to ship the items together, we will gladly consider requests to combine shipping at a reduced cost. Just e-mail us, and we can provide combined shipping cost estimates on a case-by-case basis. Depending on weight and other considerations, we typically offer full shipping rate for the first item, then 50 cents or $1.00 per item. And if you are purchasing multiple items, please make the payment as a single payment, rather than trying to pay for each item separately. Oh, and this may sound obvious, but we can't reduce the shipping charges for items on which we offer free shipping. PAYPAL: Please note that, due to Paypal's ridiculously over-protective "Confirmed Address" policy, we no longer honor requests for shipment to third party addresses, and we reserve the right to refuse to ship to unconfirmed addresses, especially overseas. If you have any questions about this, please contact us prior to bidding so we can review your options. If you have any complaints about this, please contact Paypal. SHIPPING COSTS: If the eBay auto-calculator is not responding, or if you think our shipping costs are too high, please contact us prior to bidding to determine your shipping options and costs. Repeat, prior to bidding, please. FEEDBACK: Because of abuses we've experienced in the past, we have totally given up on the eBay feedback system, so we neither give nor expect feedback. Please, therefore, do not contact us after the auction asking us to leave feedback. If you ever have a problem with an item you purchase from us, please contact us directly about it before giving negative feedback or seller ratings, and especially before invoking eBay's dreaded Grand Tribunal in processes like "Return Requests" or "Opening an Item Not as Described Case." No one is perfect, and we occasionally mis-describe something, or an item arrives late or gets damaged in the mail, but we are always quick to respond to a problem and set it straight in the most mutually agreeable way.
