Posted 7 months ago The JLab Epic Sport earbuds offer wireless connectivity and fit very securely in and on the ear. They are priced less than half the cost of AirPods and other fully wireless earbuds but offer some significant advantages. The battery life is much longer, the bass delivered is probably the best found in any earbud and they are much lighter, more secure and harder to lose. There are many options for playing music from your phone: internal speakers, external speakers, wired earphones and wireless earphones. I believe that for active users like me wireless earphones are the best choice. If you run, bike or work out regularly you certainly want to be free from wires and cannot use external speakers. The issue with wireless earphones is whether to get expensive self-contained earphones which fit in the ear and have no connecting wires (such as Apple AirPods) or earphones which have a cable connecting the right earphone to the left earphone. JLab has a great product called the Epic Sport wireless earbuds which are the latter type. Here are the specifications and features: • 8 mm driver for maximum bass • 20 – 20,000 Hz audio frequency range • Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity with AptX for better sound quality • Three position equalizer (high bass/high treble, balanced, high bass) • In-line control for volume, track skip, play, pause, answer calls, redial, equalizer setting, Siri/Google access • 12 hour battery life • Voice prompts (Power on/off, Pairing, Battery status) • Built-in microphone for calls • IP66 rating (resistance to heavy water sprays and complete protection from dust) • External memory wire ear loop for complete security • Six sets of alternate tips (Extra Small, Small, 2 sets of Medium, Large, Triple Flanged) • Three sets of cushioning fins • Cable management clip • Nice compact hard-sided travel case to hold everything • Audio burn-in software • One year warranty Included in the box (see photo) are the earbuds, instructions, five extra sets (extra small, small, medium, triple flanged and large) of alternate tips and three sets of cushioning fins (which fit into the ear to secure the bud), a magnetic USB charging cable, a clip to attach the wire to your clothing and a nice hard-sided case to hold everything. JLab also has a free app that you download to your phone (either Android or iPhone versions) which gives you access to a “burn-in” file which is supposed to condition the driver to provide better sound quality by loosening the diaphragm with a nonstop loop of white noise, pink noise, radio white noise, 20-20000 Hz frequency sweeps, 10-30000 Hz frequency sweeps, 20-200 Hz frequency sweeps, as well as a minute of silence in between each for a rest period. JLab recommends that this file be played for a total forty hours (in 3-5 hour sessions) in order to fully condition the driver. Everything looks very well made and the earbuds have a special sweat-resistant coating to protect them from moisture and dust infiltration. They are rated IP66 which means that they can withstand at least 3 minutes of continuous high pressure water spray in any direction with no damage. It also means that they are completely dust-proof. You could wear these earbuds in the shower without fear of damage! First step is to charge the ear buds. Just attach the magnetic charging cable, plug it into your computer or a USB outlet and the LED light will turn blue when they are fully charged (about two hours when fully discharged.) JLab says a full charge will provide twelve hours playing time and I can confirm that because I used them each day for three hours continuously (on long bike rides) for four straight days before I got the “low battery warning.” The charging system for the Epic Sport is unusual. It is a magnetic connector with a standard USB A plug that you attach to the in-line control module to charge the earphones. Most earphones use a micro USB connector. The JLab system is easier to connect but if you lose the special connector you will have to hunt for a replacement. I did not see one listed on the JLab website. Next, select the best fit for your ears from the wide range of tips and fins supplied with the JLab Epic Sport earphones. No matter how large or tiny your ears may be, you can be sure that you will be able to assemble a comfortable arrangement for your listening pleasure. After you have the earbuds put together, take the “memory wire” loop and match it to your ear, bending it to give a nice snug fit. It will retain that shape and give you absolute certainty that you will never lose these great earbuds, no matter how vigorous your workout or sports activity may become. Now you are ready to enjoy them! Pair the Epic Sport earbuds with your phone via Bluetooth. An audio prompt guides you but my phone paired them quickly and without drama. Put the earbuds in your ears and the loop will secure it there. The Bluetooth connection is super-reliable. I have used the earbuds in my home and can walk 30 feet from my phone without a connection break. If you lose connection it quickly restores itself when you come back into range. It is a Bluetooth 4.2 system with atpX. The “atpX” feature is supposed to improve the sound quality transmitted via Bluetooth with a superior codec. You can now start playing music immediately. The Epic Sport will respond to various voice commands, allow you to interact with Siri, take calls, etc. The inline control has three raised symbols (up arrow, down arrow and JLab round logo) which turn the earphones on/off, raise/lower volume, equalizer setting, skip tracks (forward and backward), pause and repeat tracks and has a microphone for use during calls. Full instructions are included but the use is pretty intuitive. Sound quality is superb, very clear and distortion-free with excellent midrange and highs. The bass is outstanding because these earphones have the largest driver (8 mm) available on the market. The earphones are very light (about one-half ounce) and the connecting cable is not noticeable when you use them, especially if you use the included clip to attach the cable to your clothing. Most wear the wire behind their head but I prefer to have it hang under my chin and find that is less noticeable when running or working out. I have two minor qualms about the earbuds. First, the control unit is placed just 1.5 inches below the loop for the right earbud. It was probably placed there to give quick access but I think if it were located a little further down it would be easier to use. The other issue I have is that the controls do not have a distinct “click” when pressed and there is no notification of which equalizer setting is in use. Not big faults but noticeable when you first use the earphones. Bottom line - the JLab Epic Sport earbuds are an excellent value for serious music fans who want an ulta-secure and dependable workout partner which can deliver thumping bass to help you maintain your pace right through the last mile of your next Marathon. You will be glad you chose them!!! o I would recommend this to a friend · Panther68 Rating: 5 out of 5 stars 5 Among the BEST Earbuds for Workouts Posted 7 months ago The Epic 2 Wireless Sport earbuds are being replaced with the Epic Sport Wireless earbuds (yea, I know…the “new” version just swapped words in its name, instead of calling them the “Epic 3 Wireless Sport…oh well). Anyway, disregarding the “new” name, they appear extremely similar to most of JLab’s current lineup of earbuds. So, you’re wondering, what makes these different, or special? Also, how good a sound will I get from a $99 pair of Bluetooth earbuds? And, lastly, how will they stand up to use while exercising? The Epic Sport Wireless earbuds use the same 8mm drivers as in the Epic 2, so the sound is similar…but not identical, as the earbuds offer three sound modes. The default mode (called ‘Signature Mode’) can be changed (by simultaneously pressing the “plus” & “minus” buttons) to ‘Balanced Mode’, and ‘Bass Boost’. While the ‘Signature Mode’ tends to provide “crisper & cleaner” sound, the ‘Balanced Mode’ (as the name implies) fairly evenly balanced the treble & bass. Depending on the type of music you’re listening to, sometimes the ‘Signature Mode’ is better, and sometimes the “Balanced Mode’ is better. Unfortunately, in regards to the ‘Bass Boost’, I thought it was the worst bass boost I’ve ever heard. Yes, it does boost the bass…but, unfortunately, it also sounded like the mids & highs were lowered, creating a muddy, bass-heavy sound. As much as I disliked the ‘Bass Boost’, the other two EQ modes sound extremely good. My suggestion to anyone buying these is, avoid using the ‘Bass Boost’. Another miss is that JLab didn’t bother to include anything to indicate which mode it’s in – no LED, and no audible indication. The least they could have done was a single-word indicator (such as “signature”, “balanced”, and “bass”). That being said, as long as you stick to one of the first two sound modes, you can’t go wrong. That, pretty much, answers the first two questions. As for the third question, the answer is, extremely well. They have an IP66 rating, so, while you don’t want to take a shower, or go swimming, while wearing them, they are more than adequate for fitness use. Not only that, but you won’t have to worry about them flying off while jogging, as JLab includes 5 pair of snug-fitting eartips, as well as three sizes of ear fins. The sound-isolation is better than just “good”…not equal to “noise cancelation”, but you wouldn’t want something like that while jogging. Before getting these, I had a similar pair (by another manufacturer), and I’ve always had a problem keeping them snuggly in my ears. If I whipped my head, from side-to-side, one of the earbuds usually came out…not so with the JLab Epic Sport Wireless earbuds. Once you select the proper tip & fin sizes, they should fit almost as if they were glued into your ears. Best of all, the 12-hour battery life can easily last you a few days before the earbuds need to be recharged. Are there any problems? Of course…when it comes to electronics (or, truthfully, almost anything), nothing is “perfect”. The microphone is “good”, but could be better. The earbuds are Bluetooth 4.2, instead of the more-recent Bluetooth 5.0, the charging port is microUSB, as opposed to the newer, and better-designed USB Type-C. it’s overly-easy to accidentally skip tracks when listening to music. Conclusion: While there’s room for improvement (maybe these improvements will come in the next version, which I’ll jokingly name the “Epic 2 Sport Wireless”, as opposed to the previous Epic 2 Wireless Sport), the “misses” mentioned above are not enough to detract from that that is good (or great) about them. The sound is more than just “good”…and, when one considers that these are only $99, all the better. The sound modes add value (although the “Bass Boost” detracts somewhat), as does the extensive battery life. Where most manufacturers only include 3 eartip sizes, the fact that JLab includes 5 is impressive. While there are better options out there, none are available for as low a price. You can buy two of these for the price of Bose’s offering, and still have money left over for dinner for 2. Simply put, I would easily recommend these for someone who wants really good sound, but doesn’t want to spend a lot of money. The wired pair is from a major brand and they were just okay in terms of comfort, but they did not have the soft rubber type ear inserts so I expected that. The sound was okay but not as much bass as I wanted. I also compared with a different JLAB product Epic Executive wireless buds (with noise cancelling) which have sort of ‘cushion’ flaps or fins which catch inside your ear and then finally this item (JLAB Epic Sport Wireless) which have the soft ear inserts but also go over top of your ears. I can tell you that either one is super comfortable. This item is called sport and that’s because the over the ear would seem to have a better chance of staying in your ear while jogging; however the flaps style also stayed fine during jogging, but not quite as well. Also all three kinds could be used easily with glasses. I did not expect the over the ear type (the JLAB Epic Sport i.e. this item) to accomodate the glasses as well, but they did just fine (in fact I’m wearing them while I write this with glasses). The sound from both JLABs blew the wired pair away so my further comments will compare only the JLAB buds. Both had a great and easy method of charging, both kept the charge fine. My preference would be the ‘cushion’ flap style only because they were easier to put in my ears than the over the ear type (this item). Sound wise they were similar, but noise cancelling is a desirable feature on planes which this item did not have, but the ‘cushion’ flap style did. This item has three equalizer modes which included: Bass Boost, Balanced and a so-called Signature mode with amp’d up vocals and bass which I liked best. Bluetooth connectivity is a snap with either JLAB and I did it easily with a desktop, an android phone and also to a Sling AirTV box – nice. For running I use the over the ear (this item) and for computer work or on planes I love the JLAB Epic Executive. This item for me was easily 5 star. I would highly recommend this item i.e. the JLAB Epic Sport Wireless. JLAB has their act together for excellent comfort, super sound, Bluetooth connectivity and ease of controls and charging – great. So far, sound quality for wireless technology over bluetooth or aptx just can't match good old fashioned cables. However, JLab has managed to create a pair of wireless buds that sound great period, and also are water/sweat resistant, durable, and easy on the eyes too. To start, when you open the packaging, the earbuds and one of each ear piece is displayed in a clear container that looks absolutely beautiful. Does this affect the use of my buds? No, but it's nice when a company goes the extra mile to showcase their product. The buds come with a triple flange, soft pieces, and then different sizes for each. A case and charging cable are also included. The case is big enough to hold all the extras, but not so big that it's going to be a brick in your pocket or workout bag. One nice feature that might also become a negative, is the charging. While most wireless buds I've owned or currently own use usb in some form to charge, making it easy to just grab any open cable near my desk to charge, the JLab Epics use a wireless charger. The wireless charging means the connection is magnetic, so I don't have to worry about snapping a piece off if I'm charging it in my bag, but at the same time, if you lose the included charger, you can't just pick up another cable at home. The buds are comfortable in my ears when I'm working out, which they should be, since the Epics are marketed by JLab to be for runners. One thing is the sound isolation works really well, which kind of scared me. Yes you should always be paying attention when you're out, but sometimes you need audio cues to know which direction to look out for. Overall, great earbuds that do exactly what they were designed and marketed for. Highly recommend. I've had many issues with finding earbuds that will stay in my ears for the duration of my activity due to my heavy perspiration. However, these EPIC Sports worked awesome, stayed snugly in place and have become my go-to earbuds when working out! I attribute most of the fit success to the adjustable memory wire that you can mold to your ear to assist holding those earbuds in place. They also come with 5 ear tips and 3 cush fins to really get the right fit for your ear. Did I mention that are IP66 splashproof? Yup - that will handle my heavy sweating - just don't take them in the pool with you. Sound quality is very good with the 8mm drivers in each earbud. There are 3 different EQ modes to choose from as well, so you are bound to like at least one of them. I haven't verified the 12 hour play time yet - likely I won't ever run them out as I recharge them weekly. Added bonus - a travel case to protect them in your backpack! First of all, I need to be fair and admit that I probably qualify as an earbud collector. I acquired and accumulated at least a half-dozen sets of high-end wired headsets over the years, which I retired with the advent and availability of the wireless Bluetooth versions. I got my first wireless earbuds nearly a decade ago, and have continued to update my collection with newer models from different manufacturers, as they've become available. I've even got a couple pair of the type that the right and left ear buds are untethered / independent of one another. They seemed like a great idea, but after having one fall out of my ear and into a storm drain, they lost their appeal. I recently added the these earbuds to my collection, and they are hands down my favorites so far. The fit is excellent, not to mention incredibly comfortable, the sound quality is awesome, not to mention the customization capabilities, and the 12 hour battery life brings peace of mind to my rather OCD fear of needing to recharge at any given moment. Yup, these are my new faves, and I think a second pair is in order, just to keep in my gym bag. I recently spent over 200.00 dollars to purchase some that do a little more then just music (they take your pulse etc)... Unfortunately I only use them for music as I have other gadgets for pulse and such. So I was getting tired of the heavy expensive earbuds I use regularly. Now, this is my first JLAB so had no previous experience and low expectations. THE SOUND WAS AWESOME. I know there are three settings for sound on these and honestly I havent decided which I like more but man, I was very surprised at how nice the sound is. Also battery seems to last soooo much longer then my other ones that I have to constantly charge. The JLABS have impressed me so far, I am not a fan of the fact that the charging cord is not just a basic (android style charging usb) cord but either way thats a minor issue just making sure I do not lose this magnetic charging cord. Fits very well in the ear, they seem to give you all kinds of ear foam buds so you can find the ones you are comfortable with. Either they dont stay in well, or fit is uncomfortable. Not at all the case with thse Jlabs, fit is great, comfort is just as nice, and there are many assorted sizes inserts included. Also included is a small accesory case, and charging cable. The sound with these is really nice for any earbud Ive tried. They are clear with a good amount of bass. Battery life is great, I got 3 days of use before charging them. I really like how well they fit in the ear, and that theres a shapable cable that runs behind the ear to better keep these in place. Theres volume up & down buttons, as well as pause/answer call. While the price imo, is slightly steep. These have everything a quaility set of earbuds need. The JLab Epics are IP66 sweat resistant but what sets them apart is the ear hooks. These are PROPER ear hooks in that they have a thin strip of wire in them (I guess it's wire) that lets you mould the hooks to sit tight and comfortably around your ear. Most sports headphones just have plastic hooks that flop around. Another big distinction is the JLabs noise isolation is amazing. They have a bit of rubber that fits around the buds, so when they're in you're ear the connect is sealed. The isolation is almost as good as noise cancellation. Wow. The other thing that sets these apart is the charger is not micro USB but a magnetic attachment. I have been more prone to charging these as I don't have to fiddle with an annoying charging flap. Just drop in the charger and it all goes. Sound quality is great. You can adjust equalizer by pressing the volume up and down simultaneously for 3 different preset (I prefer the bass boost version). Very happy with the JLab Epics - finally a quality sounding sports headphones that stay in my ears and on even during heavy workouts. The sound is excellent and have 3 different presets in the included EQ/enhancer. They were very easy to pair with my android phone. I have not drained the battery until dead, but they easily get me through a work day and to the gym, so around 8-10 hours (the first 8 hours at work obviously not constantly listening to music). They come with a nice charger that is magnetic.
