She was filming an episode ("Trouble in Eden") of "Murder She Wrote," on a sound stage at Universal Studios in Hollywood, California. One of the producers invited me to watch the filming. Caulfield was rehearsing a scene with Angela Lansbury for the show's 4th season. I approached the actress during a lunch break and she graciously signed it on the spot. ABOUT JOAN CAULFIELD Joan Caulfield (1922 –1991) was an American actress and model. She was discovered by producers on Broadway, and began a career onstage in 1943. She signed a contract with Paramount Pictures and became one of the studio's top stars. As one writer described her, the actress was known for "radiating delicate femininity and demure beauty." After doing a number of films from the 1940s to 1950s, she retired from the screen in 1950. The actress continued working in TV, most notably in a series called "My Favorite Husband." After signing a contract with CBS, she co-starred in the series with actor Barry Nelson. The TV series of "My Favorite Husband" was based on the radio series with Lucille Ball. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz reworked the radio series, which eventually became one of the most famous TV series in history with "I Love Lucy." Caulfield's contract at Paramount included a number of films. In the 1940s, she appeared in "Miss Susie Slagle's," (her first film) with Veronica Lake, "Duffy's Tavern" (1945), and "Monsieur Beaucaire" (a popular comedy with Bob Hope). In 1946, Caulfield starred with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire in "Blue Skies." The actress was rumored to have an affair with Bing Crosby. The film was huge success at the box office.Other films included" "Dear Ruth" (1947 with William Holden)), "Welcome Stranger" (again with Bing Crosby in 1947) and "Variety Girl" (an all-star film for Paramount)One of Caulfield's most memorable film roles (loaned out to Warner Brothers) was "The Unsuspected" with Claude Rains. Caulfield also starred in "The Sainted Sisters" and the film-noir "Larceny" (1948)At Columbia, she did "The Petty Girl" (1950- with Robert Cummings) to change her image. She also made a film for her husband's company called "The Lady Says No" (1951). She also had a supporting role in "The Rains of Ranchipur" (1955). In 1957, after being the subject of "This is Your Life," Caulfield caught the attention of TV executives and embarked on a new career in television. Her TV work included: "Ford Television Theater," "Sally" (a short-lived situation comedy). When the series ended, she did guest-star roles on "Pursuit," "General Electric Theater," "Cheyenne," "Burke's Law," and "My Three Sons." In 1967, she starred in the TV series (pilot episode) of "The High Chaparral. In the Golden Age of Hollywood, studios groomed and promoted their stars in a very unique way. Caulfield had worked as a model and was considered one of the most photogenic of them all. She appeared on countless magazine covers and was so popular with the public, Paramount produced several versions of paper dolls for promotional purposes. In later interviews, Caulfield described her career and the drawbacks of movie stardom, saying "I didn't go Hollywood on the outside with flashy cars, upstairs maids and mink covered bathroom fixtures. I went Hollywood on the inside and that's worst of all. I tried to avoid being natural. I lowered my voice. I copied the mannerisms of other stars. I struck poses. I received bad advice - from dramatic coaches, from agents, and from studio executives. I stopped being a human being. I blame myself and I blame Hollywood's star system."
