Joe Haymes (born February 10, 1907) was often described as "the forgotten pioneer of big band jazz" grew up in Springfield, Missouri. After teaching himself to play piano he eventually was hired by the great Chicago-based Ted Weems in the late 1920s for whom he arranged a number of sides. He formed his own band in 1930, operating first out of Tulsa, Oklahoma before heading to New York City. Relocating to New York City by 1932, the Haymes orchestra was briefly one of the country's hottest dance bands, with a particular knack for jazz novelties and recording on all 3 major labels, He continued to record until 1937. Some of the more notable musicians in his band in this period included clarinetist Johnny Mince and Paul Ricci, alto sax player Toots Mondello, trumpet players Pee Wee Erwin, Sterling Bose, Cliff Weston and Lee Castle (Castaldo), and tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Bud Freeman In 1938 Haymes joined Les Brown as an arranger and then found work in the 1940s arranging for Hollywood films. He stayed in this field right through to the early 1960s. Joe Haymes passed away at age 57 on July 10, 1964. The Joe Haymes and His Orchestra CD’s Encore 1 to Encore 6, include the majority of their recordings made from 1932 to 1936. Many of the sides include hot jazz solos and interesting arrangements.
