Description: John Roscoe Turner Autograph President of West Virginia 1928-1935 A 1x4' cut signature of John Roscoe Turner, affixed to a 3x5 index card. Turner was a former US economist and educator president of West Virginia University 1928-1935 dean of men at City College of New York 1935-1942. Slight glue residue surrounding the signature, but signature is strong and in vintage fountain pen. Provenance: We recently purchased a nice portion of the William Tierney collection. For six months in the early 1930s—April 1 to October 1, 1932—the Waterman fountain pen company ran a contest for boys and girls. Each entrant was to fill an autograph album with signatures of notables of the day and send it to the company to qualify for a prize. An array of 333 prizes were given away, from the $1000 first prize to the Waterman’s pencil for runners up. Waterman’s autograph album, 5 x 7.25, belonging to a young man named William Tierney of Weston, West Virginia, with 324 clipped ink and pencil signatures, almost all on clipped slips affixed to the inside pages, and later removed from the book and glued to 3x5 index cards. A copy of the original sale scanned below (not included since the names listed probably do not match the offered items) as it was originally sold through RR Auction in 2012.
