Description: JOHN S. MOSBY. John S. Mosby (1833-1916) was a fabled Confederate ranger whose guerrilla band specialized in attacking and disrupting Union supply lines. He earned the nickname “The Gray Ghost” for his clandestine and highly effective attack tactics. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY JOHN S. MOSBY REFLECTING ON THE FAMOUS PORTRAIT OF MOSBY AND HIS RANGERS TAKEN BY THE BENDANN BROTHERS IN 1865 Autograph letter signed by, “Jno: S. Mosby,” reflecting on the famous portrait of Mosby and his rangers taken by the Bendann brothers in 1865: “Your letter rec’d. If Donnington calls with the picture I shall give him any heap I can. I think you will find the full names of both Robinson (Claiborne as I recollect) & of Banchard in Scott’s book. Blanchard wrote a song wh[ich] is published in the appendix of Scott’s book, ‘Col. Mosby’s last order I am going to relate.’” Sent to James Joseph Williamson, contains one page on Department of Justice letterhead, measures 10.5 by 8 inches, created in Washington, DC on March 9, 1909, and in very fine condition with only very light toning and an ink stain near the center right border. “IF DONNINGTON CALLS WITH THE PICTURE I SHALL GIVE HIM ANY HEAP I CAN. I THINK YOU WILL FIND THE FULL NAMES OF BOTH ROBINSON (CLAIBORNE AS I RECOLLECT) & OF BANCHARD IN SCOTT’S BOOK.” Rangers Claiborne Robinson and Harris Chamberlain Blanchard are photographed next to Mosby and John Scott’s Partisan Life with Col. John S. Mosby was published in 1867. Williamson (1834-1915) served as a private in Company A of Mosby’s cavalry regiment giving him first-hand knowledge of the unit’s experience during the war. He kept a diary that he used in his narrative account Mosby’s Rangers: A Record of the Operations of the Forty-Third Battalion of Virginia Cavalry from its Organization to the Surrender published in 1896.
