Description: Steinbeck, John - The Grapes of Wrath - Viking Press: New York, 1939 - First Edition / First Printing - “First Published in April 1939” stated on the copyright page with no mention of later printings as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. “And the great owners, who must lose their land in an upheaval, the great owners with access to history, with eyes to read history and to know the great fact: when property accumulates in too few hands it is taken away. And that companion fact: when a majority of the people are hungry and cold they will take by force what they need. And the little screaming fact that sounds through all history: repression works only to strengthen and knit the repressed. The great owners ignored the three cries of history. The land fell into fewer hands, the number of the dispossessed increased, and every effort of the great owners was directed at repression. The money was spent for arms, for gas to protect the great holdings, and spies were sent to catch the murmuring of revolt so that it might be stamped out. The changing economy was ignored, plans for the change ignored; and only means to destroy revolt were considered, while the causes of revolt went on.” The book has heavy wear with stains, soiling, splitting along the spine, general grubbiness and the lower front tip and edges of the block have been chewed. The corner clipped dust jacket was long ago laid onto thick brown paper, has heavy wear with areas of loss, residue on the flaps, and other assorted flaws. A serviceable copy which presents reasonably well with the jacket retaining the vast majority of the iconic art/design. A flawed example of this seminal true first edition. Steinbeck’s unquestioned masterpiece, a Dust Bowl title set during the Great Depression. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Basis for the superb 1940 adaptation which was directed by John Ford and starred Henry Fonda. All books are offered with a full 30 day postage paid return policy. All books which are in dust jackets will be mailed with a clear archival dust jacket protector fitted. Shipping costs can be combined if multiple purchases are made. Items will be packaged and shipped within one business day unless otherwise noted. Please always feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. ...
