Description: JPL Pouyat Limoges 8 5/8" Plate Hand Painted Pink Carnations w/Gold 1890-1932 Elegant Decorative 8 5/8" PLATE from JPL (Jean Pouyat) Limoges, France, HAND PAINTED by a Talented Artist, Beautiful PINK CARNATION FLOWERS w/GOLD Trim, Scalloped, Embossed, Circa 1890-1932 DESCRIPTION: This plate was designed in a very classic pattern with hand decorated pink carnations, green leaves and stems by a talented artist. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The mold is very interesting with scalloping and embossing the rim. The gold on the rim is bold and bright and also highlights the embossing. The wash behind the flowers starts out as a very light yellow progressing to a darker yellow at the center of the plate. There are grey ghost flowers and leaves to give depth to the design. The back of the plate is the high white of the porcelain. CONDITION: While this plate is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There is very minor age appropriate wear to the gold on some of the points on the rim. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The plate has a diameter of 8 5/8" and a height of 1 1/8". HISTORY/MARKS: The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French names associated with the porcelain in the Limoges region dating all the way back to the 1700’s. Jean Pouyat began a company in 1842 at Limoges and the business was carried on by his sons after his death in 1849. About 1883, the company became known as La Ceramique. The now famous JPL backstamps were used beginning in 1851 and the specific one that is on this plate is called mark #5 (Mary Frank Gaston in Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition) which was used from 1890-1932.
