Description: JPL Pouyat Limoges Dresser Serving Tray Hand Painted Yellow Roses Gold 1890-1932 Elegant Decorative 12 1/4" SERVING or DRESSER TRAY from JPL (Jean Pouyat) Limoges, France, HAND PAINTED by a Talented Artist, Beautiful YELLOW ROSES w/GREEN LEAVES, circa 1890-1932 DESCRIPTION: This tray was designed in a very classic pattern with hand painted yellow roses, green leaves and thorny stems by a talented artist. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The blooms are set in a oval cartouche around the rim of the tray. Between the flowers and the rim of the plate is a band of cheerful, warm yellow that is outlined on both sides by a band of gold. The rim is smooth. The back of the tray is the unglazed white of the porcelain. CONDITION: While this tray is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There is no wear to the paint including the gold. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The oval tray is 12 1/4" by 9 3/8" and a height of 5/8". HISTORY/MARKS: The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French names associated with the porcelain in the Limoges region dating all the way back to the 1700’s. Jean Pouyat began a company in 1842 at Limoges and the business was carried on by his sons after his death in 1849. About 1883, the company became known as La Ceramique. The now famous JPL backstamps were used beginning in 1851 and the specific one that is on this tray is called mark #5 (Mary Frank Gaston in Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition) which was used from 1890-1932.
