Description: The sculptor Justin Mathieu (1796-1864) specialized in reliefs of historical and religious subjects, many shown in the Paris Salons between 1846 and 1864. King Louis IX of France (r. 1226-70), later Saint Louis, undertook two crusades to the Holy Land, the Seventh and the Eighth Crusade. This bas-relief shows him leading his army agains the Saracens. This plaster bas-relief is framed in a heavy, wooden frame. The white shading around some of the frame details is part of the design.
