OR IS HE JUST ON ANOTHER PLANET?The cult-hit novel K-PAX, now a film from Universal starring Kevin Spacey as prot.K-PAX is a gloriously off-beat comedy that reads like a combination of STARMAN, Oliver Sacks and ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOOS NEST ESQUIRE Kirkus UK Review This 1995 novel was made into a film in 2001, and its easy to see why such eminent actors as Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey were keen to become involved with the project. It is essentially a two-hander about a psychiatrist, also called Gene Brewer, and his latest patient, known only as prot, who claims to be from another planet - K-PAX. Dr Brewer had been on the verge of giving up most of his caseload in order to assume a more senior role in his New York psychiatric institute, but prot is a sufficiently interesting subject to make him postpone the decision. He is sure that prot is really just an alternate personality, and sets about coaxing out the person beneath. But the doctor struggles to prove the veracity of his theory because prots delusions (if that is what they are) are remarkably consistent, and he displays knowledge of astronomy, as seen from K-PAX, that cannot be easily explained away or ignored. For all that, Brewers main problem may be prots hold over the other patients, all of whom are keen to accompany their new friend back to his utopian planet. The novel is just as much about the doctor/narrator as about his charge. The fictional Brewers compassion, fear and professional intransigence are laid bare and examined just as much as prots illness. The notion of an outsider providing a catalyst for other people to develop a better understanding of themselves is hardly new, but it is handled here with a winning sensitivity and a light comedic touch. The character of prot is intriguing, and readers may find themselves hoping that he really does turn out to be from K-PAX, because it would be comforting to believe that such a place could exist. As Dr Brewer takes gradual steps towards the truth about prot, there is a real feeling of apprehension as to how the revelations might affect everybody involved; but the truth may not be everything.
