Description: Autographed original Al White color 8” x 10” photograph playing his trombone with fellow trombonist Urbie Green at the Newport Jazz Festival, 1971. Kai Winding (1922-1983) was born in Denmark, to a naturalized American Father and a Danish Mother. The family moved to New York City in 1934. After graduating from high school, Winding played in Shorty Allen’s Band; he also played in Sonny Dunham and Alvino Rey’s bands before enliting in the Coast Guard during World War II. After his discharge in 1944, he joined Benny Goodman’s Orchestra and then went to the West Coast and played in Stan Kenton’s Orchestra. Winding became famous due to this move as Kenton gave him lots of solos. In 1949, Kai played in the first recordings of Miles Davis “Birth of Cool”. He left Kenton in 1954 and started up a quintet with fellow trombonist J.J. Johnson. They made several recordings including one called the “Trombonium” with 8 trombones! The trombonist composed and arranged the vast majority of the material they played and recorded. After that broke up, he led a septet with four trombones and rhythm. In the 1960’s, Winding was the first to record the song “Time is on My Side” later made famous by the Rolling Stones. He released the theme “More” from the 1962 film “Mondo Cane” and turned the music into a huge hit and many followed suit including, Glenn Campbell, Vic Damone, Duke Ellington, and Frank Sinatra among others. He later played in the Giants of Jazz Band with Art Blakely, Dizzie Gillespie, Thelonius Monk and Sonny Stitt. He also played as a side man on numerous recordings including, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Krupa, Chuck Mangione, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughn, The Modern Jazz Quartet and many more!
