In 1972, the lighthouse's original keeper died suddenly while watching passing ships with a spyglass; his death was never fully explained. Then, in 1991, an archaeologist working on historic site preservation reported several mysterious happenings, including mystical music coming from the shores, distant cries for help, and the sound of a foghorn—despite there being no foghorn on the island. Many believe the sounds were the work of the ghost of Captain Robert Sheffield, who originally purchased the islands in the early 1800s (and apparently had a knack for weird musical instruments). Today, Sheffield Island Lighthouse offers guided group tours from May through September. Kay is approximately 14 inches long and 5 inches wide with porcelain face, hands and feet. The STORY of Kay is as follows: Kay was used as a trigger object by a medium who took a tour of the lighthouse. She made contact with a 9-year-old girl named kay. She said her uncle used to work at the lighthouse. Her daddy would take her to visit him on the weekends. She loved to play on the beach and find pretty shells. Kay said she got a bad bad cough during the winter and passed away a few weeks later. She said that now she can't leave the lighthouse and does not know where her uncle and daddy went and started crying. The medium said she has passed away many years ago and if she wanted to leave and find a new family that she could attach herself to the doll and the medium would find her a new home.
