Description: Description On this recording the brilliant young Japanese conductor Kazuki Yamada conducts the Japan Philharmonic in a programme which features the less well-known orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition by Leopold Stokowski. The disc also includes Debussy's Prlude l'aprs-midi d'un faune, and Ravel's La Valse. This CD is taken from a live recording made at the inauguration concert of the highly-regarded Japanese conductor Kazuki Yamada as Resident Conductor of Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. Now resident in Berlin, Kazuki Yamada was born in Kanagawa, Japan, in 1979. He was awarded the Ataka-Prize in 2001 when he graduated from the conducting course at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music. In 2011 he received the Idemitsu Music Prize for young artists in Japan. Kazuki Yamada also holds positions with several other leading orchestras including Principal Guest Conductor of Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. The main feature of the programme performed at this event was Leopold Stokowski's arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. The most well-known orchestral version of this suite was written by Ravel in 1922 at the request of conductor Serge Koussevitzky, but several other composers and musicians made arrangements of the piece, including the legendary conductor Leopold Stokowski. His version was written in 1939, and is notable for being more overtly Russian in its musical colour and primitiveness.
