Long ago, in another lifetime, I was a dive bar bartender in the East Village of NYC. If you went to ANY bar in the EV, I guarantee I'd worked, or at least spent some time there... It was behind these whisky soaked bars that a silly private joke about "salve" was born, and the quest for the perfect candidate was launched. My girl Denise and I would parade our findings to each other, and debate the merits of the balms, and I picked up a lot of knowledge along the way... some even about hand care! My favorite take-away was lanolin. A natural emollient, it protects the skin and locks in moisture. Enter Shea Butter. High concentrations of fatty acids make shea butter an ideal part of my salve for its deep moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties. This may seem silly- but this isn't a "lightweight invisible" moisturizer, it's serious business, so here's my how-to: Scrape a small pea sized dollop out with the back of your nail and place it in the palm. Warm the product between the palms for a few seconds, avoiding the fingertips. Apply the Salve to the backs of the hands and between the fingers with your palms, making sure to get at the webs of those digits. Swipe the remaining product on the palm down the backs of the fingers, from knuckle to nail, and rub each cuticle with the web between the thumb and forefinger. If you do get some on your fingertips, I usually wipe it on my elbows or knees. This will allow you to not have sticky fingertips and to keep on keeping on with your day. Before bed, however- all bets are off! Slather a thin layer all over hands and/or feet and slap on some wool or cotton gloves or socks for an overnight deep treatment and wake up to baby-soft skin.
