KING JAMES II (GREAT BRITAIN) - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 9/13/1661 - HFSID 276881 KING JAMES II As Duke of York, recently restored to power after the English Civil War, he gives instructions to the Governor of Dunkirke regarding prize money. Manuscript Letter signed: "your affectionate friend/James" as Lord High Admiral, 1p, 7¾x11½. Whitehall (London), 1661 September 13. Addressed on integral leaf "For the Lord Rutherford/Governor of Dunkirke". In full: "In answer to your letter considering the Chevalier de Plessis and his prizes I consider it best for you to let the Chevalier de Plessis know that he cannot have any liberty there to break bulk [?]; and that if the proprietors of his prizes pursued him, that then the Laws and that port must be free for them to prosecute him, and therefore his best way will be to depart with his prizes which till reclaimed you may permit him to do. I am". King James II (1633-1701, reigned 1685-1688), the last Catholic King of England, proved to be a strong advocate of absolute monarchy and of religious freedom. Both of these views brought him into conflict with Parliament, and resulted in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, whereby James was deposed and replaced on the throne by his Protestant daughter Mary and her husband, William III (of Orange). The second son of King Charles I, beheaded by Parliament in 1649 during the English Civil War, James was exiled in France during the Commonwealth era of Oliver Cromwell. With the Restoration of the monarchy (1660), James' elder brother was recognized as King Charles II, and James reclaimed his childhood titles, including Duke of York. James, who had commanded French and Spanish armies during his exile, also resumed and now exercised the office of Lord High Admiral. It was in this capacity that he dealt with issues of prize ships at the port of Dunkirk. (Royalist forces had commissioned privateers during the English Civil War. The long disputed port of Dunkirk, on the northern coast of France, had been captured from the Spanish by Cromwell's navy in 1657, and remained in English hands until sold to France by Charles II in 1662. Dunkirk would re-enter English history in 1940 for the successful evacuation of the British Army from France in 1940.) When Britain seized New Amsterdam from the Dutch in 1664, the city was renamed New York in honor of James. Albany, New York, takes its name from James' Scottish title, Duke of Albany. Andrew BARON RUTHERFORD (d. 1664), a Scottish Catholic who had served - like James - in the French army in the 1850s, was Governor of Dunkirk from the Restoration until the town was sold to France two years later. The DUKE OF PLESSIS-PRASLIN (1598-1672), a French nobleman, is remembered today chiefly for the praline, a candy which according to legend was invented by his chef. Lightly foxed. Lightly creased, with mailing folds. Proper old repairs to edges of address leaf, not affecting any text. Overall, fine condition.
