Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) KIRN has been described as merely a prolongation of Dunoon, one of the most frequented of the Clyde watering-places; but the little resort possesses so many attractions peculiarly its own that it bids fair in course of time to make a name for itself, quite independent of its older and wealthier neighbour. Kirn is 291 miles from Glasgow, and from its situation commands most extensive views of the Clyde and its adjacent lochs. The little town has much to recommend it on the score of quiet, cosy beauty, and forms a sort of head- quarters for visitors who prefer its convenient remoteness from which to make excursions to the more active and fashionable resort of which it is an offshoot. There is much of interest to command the attention of the tourist in the near vicinity of Kim. One delightful excursion may be made by steamer to the Isle of Bute, which, though not grandly mountainous, commands fine views and is rich in antiquarian remains. At Castle Toward is an ivy-covered tower, the remains of a stronghold of the Lamants, while a little farther afield in another direction is Gourock, an animated scene at all times, being a place of embarkation for the Clyde steamers. Two miles west of this town stands the remains of another ruined tower of Levan Castle, and a mile farther in the same direction is the Cloch Lighthouse, where the open Firth begins. To the Englishman paying a first visit to Scotland, the neighbourhood described above is one of continual surprises; and a holiday spent on the lochs in this part of 'Britain will fill him with a determination to repeat the trip at the first convenient opportunity.
