Description: Kitagawa Utamaro ◎Born in 1753, he professed himself to be descended from the Ninamoto family. His legitimate name vas Nobumi Kitagava. He was commonly called Ichitaro in his infancy. Later his name was changed to Yusuke and then to Yuki. Being a native of Kawagoe, Musashi Province (Saitawa Prefecture), he lost his father soon after his birth. He is said to have removed to Edo (Shogunate capital) with his mother in his boyhood. From about that time, he got interested in painting and studied under master painter Sekien Toriyama who poured his affection on the promising youth. Then he used such pseudonyms as Mokuen, Entaisai or Shioku. After first settled at Shinobugaoka of Edo, he stayed for some period at the house of wood-print publisher Juzaburo Tsutaya at Tsuyu cho as a hanger on. Thereafter he changed his quarters frequently and resided at such places as Utamaro Utamaro Kanda-Kyunemon-cho, Bakuro-cho 3-chome and Kanda-Benkeibashi. His initial work is unidentified. But among his block-printed pictures left behind is found one drawn at the age of 23 in 1776, From around that time, he pursued a career as an Ukiyo-e artist until his last years. He left a large number of works which include colored woodblock prints, illustrated story books and illustrations for yellow-covered novels (Kibyoshi) and satirical poon (Kyoka) books. The characteristic brush of his exhibits exquisitely the chara of blockprinted pictures.
