In his sophomore season Bryant and Lower Merion took off, with the team compiling a 77-13 record in his final three years with the team. It was his junior season that Bryant burst onto the high school basketball scene. During that year, he put together a sterling campaign in which he averaged 31.1 points, 10.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. The year ended with him being named Pennsylvania Player of the Year, and offers from top colleges began to pour in. That season, Kevin Garnett went directly from high school to the NBA, giving Bryant the idea to do the same. Senior year Bryant sealed his status of one of the best high school basketball players of all time with a huge senior season that saw him average 30.8 points, 12 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 4 steals and 3.8 blocked shots per game. The Aces started the campaign just 1-3, but won 30-straight games from there to finish the 1995-96 season with an astonishing 31-3 record. The Aces won their first PIAA state championship since 1943 in a 48-43 win against Erie Cathedral Prep. He was named the Naismith High School Player of the Year, the Gatorade Men’s National Basketball Player of the Year, a USA Today All-USA First Team player and a McDonald’s All-American. When Bryant took off his Aces jersey for the final time, he had amassed a state-record 2,883 points during his high school career to pass Wilt Chamberlain, who had scored more than 2,200 points in his career at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia.
