During the Korean War, the US 2nd Infantry Division employed sentry dogs to protect its soldiers and equipment. Sentry dogs were trained to detect and alert their handlers to the presence of enemy troops, weapons, and equipment. The handlers who worked with these dogs were specially trained to work with and care for the animals. They were responsible for training the dogs, maintaining their health and fitness, and handling them in the field. One of the most famous sentry dog handlers in the 2nd Infantry Division was Private First Class William A. "Pal" Marr. Pal was a German Shepherd who was assigned to PFC Marr in 1953. Pal and PFC Marr worked together on the front lines of the Korean War, patrolling the perimeter of their unit's position and alerting Marr to the presence of any enemy activity. Pal was trained to detect the scent of enemy soldiers and weapons, and would bark to alert Marr if he detected anything suspicious.Pal and Marr worked together for several months, and Pal's alertness and dedication helped to keep their unit safe during a time of intense fighting. PFC Marr was eventually wounded in combat and was forced to leave Korea, but he was able to arrange for Pal to be shipped back to the United States, where he was retired from military service and lived out the rest of his life with PFC Marr's family.Pal and PFC Marr's story became famous after the war, and they were even featured on the television show "This Is Your Life." Their story is a testament to the bond between soldiers and their animals, and to the bravery and dedication of the sentry dog handlers who served in the Korean War.
