From the Foreword: I am very pleased that the "Korean Costumes and Textiles Exhibition" will be held at the IBM Gallery in New York from April 14 to June 13. The exhibition has been one of the long-term projects of the Korean Overseas Information Service. Most of the items on display were shown at a special exhibition "The Beauty of Korea" which was held at the National Museum of Korea from August 19 to October 30, 1988, as part of events in celebration of the 1988 summer Olympic Games held in Seoul-an exhibition which won much acclaim from many foreign visitors. Unlike the previous Korean exhibitions overseas which have tended to emphasize Korea's traditional fine arts, this exhibition features costumes, personal ornaments, and traditional items for daily use in the latter half of the Choson Kingdom (1392-1910). I believe, therefore, that the exhibition will be an excellent opportunity for Americans to gain an insight into the traditional life style of the Korean people. As part of a cultural exchange program between Korea and the United States, the exhibition will also help enhance mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries. I want to express my thanks to the Sok Chu-son Memorial Museum of Korean Folk Arts, Dankook University; the Huh Dong-hwa Museum of Korean Embroidery; the Oryundae Memorial Museum of Korean Martyrs; the National Museum of Korea; the Elcanto Company and Prof. Chang Sook-hwan of the Kyungwon University and Kim Hee-jin for loaning their collections to the exhibition. I also pay tribute to Richard P. Berglund, Director of Cultural Programs, IBM Corporation; Director-General Han Byong-sam and Chief Curator Chung Yang-mo of the National Museum of Korea, Prof. Yi Song-mi of the Academy of Korean Studies, and President Oh Chang-Kyoo of IBM Korea for their assistance and devotion to this exhibition which has long been in the making. 108 pages.
