Description: Kraeuter & Company was founded by August Kraeuter, a German immigrant who came to America in 1859. By 1904 the company was a respected manufacturer of quality tools, especially pliers. Much of the mid-20th century history of the company has been lost. In the 1960s Kraeuter was acquired by Dresser. Kraeuter became a major manufacturer of pliers in the early 20th century. It was one of the first manufacturers to use an alloy steel for its hand tools, as early as 1916 and specifically nickel steel, prior to a wider use by other companies in the 1920s. They are also well-known for patterned handles which they referred to as “Beauty Grips” which appeared in the 1920s. A simplified pattern evolved and the grip pattern on the Handles of this 1943 Slip Joint helps to narrow production date to 1946 while the Solid Rivet expands the range to sometime in the 1950s, according to Alloy Artifacts. The Pliers are fully-functional. They show obvious use but no abuse or misuse. We did not try to determine whether the plating is Nickel because it was Kraeuter’s usual choice and it is chipped here and there (see images). Additionally, there is some corrosion (see images) which may or may not be removed with proper cleaning. The Slip Joint works properly, but will benefit from cleaning and lubrication. Both the Jaws and the Cutters are undamaged (see images). There is slight movement in the Pivot Point. The Pliers will serve as a daily-user or as an example of fine-tools-gone-by and will probably serve for another half-century or more. We will ship the Pliers by USPS Ground Advantage on the next regular business day following receipt of payment.
