Description: Wildflowers Across America Author: JOHNSON, Lady Bird; Carlton B. Lees; photographs selected by Les Line Title: Wildflowers Across America Publication: New York: National Wildflower Research Center / Abbeville Press, (1988) Edition: Second printing Description: Hardcover. Small square quarto, 309pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, with some gentle fading to the edges; very good. Some pencil erasures to an early page. In a fine dust jacket, a tinge sun-faded on the spine. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Lady Bird Johnson on a bookplate affixed to the front free endpaper: "For Mary Beth with deep appreciation and warmest wishes. Lady Bird Johnson." Another inscription below reads: "Mary Beth - and a special thanks to you for Speaker Foley's visit to Austin University of Texas. J. J. Pickle 10th Dist. (Texas) Oct. 27, 1991." Pickle was (as his inscription indicates) a US Congressman for the 10th District of Texas. While we cannot definitifely identify Mary Beth, given the context, we think this might be Mary Beth Nethercutt, wife of George, who unseated Speaker Tom Foley (referenced in the inscription) in a dramatic 1994 upset as part of the so-called Republican Revolution. The two politicians had not been adversaries before the 1994 race, so they may have been on good speaking terms at the time of the inscription (as they would be again not long after the election). In any event, Pickle was a longtime close friend and sometimes campaign aide to Lyndon Johnson, and was a good friend of Lady Bird's, as well. An appealing Texas copy of this beautifully produced and well-illustrated survey of American wildflowers by perhaps our nation's most green-thumbed First Lady. Very good / fine.
