Description: This antique Victorian brooch measures 2 1/2” long by 1 1/2” wide. It is dimensional and cast from one sheet of metal. Rope is entwined around an anchor which is further embellished with a dolphin and waves. The brooch is silver plated with high points, particularly the rope, having brassed. Victorian jewery was replete with symbolism. Victorian jewelry of this type is called sentimental. The anchor alone is the emblem of hope, but the marriage of anchor and dolphin means something a little different and spans two millennia. The dolphin is primarily noted for its swiftness; the anchor for steadfastness and stability. Together their motto is “hasten slowly.” The Roman Emperor Titus took this symbol as his, as have many others throughout history, always meaning maturity in governance and business.
