Description: Rare Very Large Torah Bible From The Book Of NumbersPoland ca 300-350 yrs oldBook of Numbers - 15:7 - 22:20 The Scroll measures approx height 24.4" X Length 48.8"62 cm x 124 cm Rare large Manuscript hand-written Torah Bible Scroll leaf from the book of Exodus "The Tabernacle and its furnishings" hand written on genuine calf parchment. The sofer (or scribe) follows the Early Ashkenazi tradition and comply with rules and laws of the Ashkenazi Vellish "Kabbalah" script. It preserves extremely early scribal Ashkenazi traditions and preserves interesting textual anomalies and is also filled with Kabbalistic anomalies characteristic predominantly of early scribal traditions, which was prevalent in Medieval Germany & Poland. The Torah Scroll has survived through the Nazi Holocaust and the atrocities of WWII and came from Poland with other judaic items that have survived the Holocaust. The scroll is in very good condition considering its age, with a few corrected letters. It is extremely carefully and beautifully written. There is strong evidence as to the Poland origin of the present scroll. Torah scrolls have no punctuation, vowel signs, signatures, colophons, or dates, making the task of identifying the time and place of a particular scroll notoriously difficult. Scholars are able, with varying degrees of success and accuracy, to determine both the geographic origin of a torah scroll as well as its approximate date of creation, by the analysis of the scribal variants distinctive to a particular region or group. Various textual traditions, section divisions and layout as well as occasional halakhic references also help to determine when and where certain customs or practices obtained. The present Scroll, has the ancient scribal tradition of the Vellish Script and of special tagin (crowns or tittles) and the "anomalous, curved and spiral letters, seen mostly on scrolls that came from Poland & Germany. The uses of Cabbalistic spirals and flourishes throughout. There are many special characters and Spirals all over in this Torah like the spiral "Ayin" [ע] a 'Pe lefufa' or spiral Pe [ פ] having its 'nose' twisted inwards (it was also called 'a double Pe' that means a Pe having another inside), Nun [ נ] and Ayin [ ע] with a tail etc. This tradition, which was prevalent in Mediaeval Northern France Germany & Poland. The scribal tradition of the 'anomalous, curved and spiral letters' the present Torah-scroll into a special rarity. These special characters has a kabalistic meaning to them but because the confusion of where and how to draw them the scribes were ordered to stop adding them to the torah and for this you do not see these characteristics on modern scrolls. This leaf is decorated with those special beautiful characters and crowns as you can see in the pictures. In the present Scroll, a distinct blank space at the end of each verse giving a double space between the verses. In which Elazar of Worms (Rokeah, fl. 13th century) noted, to include such spaces, Samson ben Eliezer, author of the Barukh she-Amar notes that, even in his day, only the scribes of Poland remained meticulous in the observance of this particular tradition. This seems to be a strong indicator that it was written in Poland.
