Description: This large figural Veracruz Incensario dates to 500-700AD and measures 8.6" x 8" x 14.4" (21.8 x 20.3 x36.6cm) is made of multiple pieces of hand-modeled pottery, with fascinating iconography. The figure is seated on a conical base, leaning forward, with it's small hands placed on the lower thighs. The figure wears a huge pectoral, huge round earrings and a large multi-tiered headdress that forms the top of the of the incensario and appears crowned by feathers. Around the mouth, on the headdress, shoulders and pectoral is a thick black pigment, chapapote, that is common to Veracruz artwork. A cylindrical spout sticks up from one side of the bowl , while the rounded handle rises from the back centre of the bowl, perhaps meant to allow a worshipper to carry it. The incensario has been repaired from multiple pieces, with areas of restoration to one arm, on the headdress and on the two "fins" that projectfrom the back sides. Provenance: Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, acquired prior to 1970. A COA from the auction house I purchased the Incensario from will be part of the sale. Due to it's size and weight postage will be costly and I want to ship it as safely as possible. I will refund any difference between the actual postage cost and the one I have estimated. Please contact me with any questions. I am Happy to take more photos if required.
