El propósito de lo que se ha escrito aquí es mostrar que aquellos que practican la aspersión, o derramar, son enteramente obedientes tanto al Espíritu como a la letra del mandato divino.SegÚn él mismo relata en su libro, fue solicitado por la Casa Bautista de Publicaciones para escribir un libro en defensa de los puntos de vista bautistas. Fairfield, además de pastor, fue escritor, político y académico. Como político, llegó a ser Senador del Estado de Michigan y Vicegobernador del mismo estado. Fue presidente del Hillsdale College durante veinte años, y en 1876 fue elegido Canciller de la Universidad de Nebraska.Murió el 7 de noviembre de 1904 en Oberlin, Ohio.
