Description: Late 19th century mixed media on paper genre painting The Doctor's Visit by Walter Granville Smith (1870-1938), listed NewYork/New Jersey artist, watercolor/gouache/ink on paper laid to paper board, 8 7/8" by 13 1/8", signed lower left, under Museum Glass in contemporary Dutch style frame with linen liner, 20 1/4" by 24 1/4". Artist studied with Walter Satterlee, J. Carroll Beckwith, and Willard Metcalf at Art Students League of New York and in Paris at Academie Julian. He was a member of American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club, Society of Painters (NY), Allied Artists of America, Greenwich Society of Artists, National Arts Club, American Guild of Artists, Grand Central Art Galleries (NYC). He was elected Associate (1908) and Academician (1915) of the National Academy of Design, and had a phenomenal exhibition record, showing at Boston Art Club 1898-1909, National Academy of Design 1890-1940, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts 1904-1928, Art Institute of Chicago 1896-1925, Corcoran Biennials 1907-1937, Carnegie International 1905-1931, and others, winning numerous awards. During his lifetime his genre scenes were illustrations for Harper's Magazine, Scribner's, Truth, Collier's, and other leading publications of the late 19th century. This work was offered at James Julia Auction in 2003 with an estimate of $3500-$4500. Condition very good, paper laid to paper board in its history, 1/2" tear repair to top edge, right upper corner and right edge loss covered by framing, frame with minor finish blemishes.
