Description: This is a very good quality large Silver Plate Soup Ladle from the late 19th or early 20th century. The ladle is in the Old English Thread pattern with the thread decoration on both the upper and under side of the stem. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The soup ladle is made in Sheffield by the renowned firm Harrison Brothers & Howson and dates to the period between around 1880 and about 1920. The firm was founded in 1847 when James & Henry Harrison and James Howson acquired the silversmith business of Thomas Sansom & Sons. They established themselves as high class cutlers, silversmiths and electroplaters and remained in the Harrison and Howson families until the business was bought out by Viner's Ltd in 1923. Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after a hundred or more years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs. The ladle is of a substantial size measuring 30.5cm / 12ins in length and 9.8cm / 3.8ins across the bowl. It weighs in at 237.9g / 8.4oz. The underside of the stem is stamped with H B & H for Harrison Brothers & Howson, EP for silver plate and A1 to show that it is the top grade of silver plate.
