Lauterbrunnen is traversed by the Weisse Lütschine, which overflows its banks on average once a year. The most famous and spectacular tourist attraction of the place are the Trümmelbach falls, several waterfalls inside a mountain. After 1300, the barons of Turn, who were mainly wealthy in Valais, settled in the upper Lauterbrunnen valley. In contrast to the rest of the Bernese Oberland, Lauterbrunnen was settled from Valais. The locality appears in the sources in 1240 as claro fonte, in 1304 as Luterbrunnen. The place name refers to the clear (louder) springs and streams (fountains). In the 13th century, the Lauterbrunnen Valley belonged to Century partly to the rule of Rotenfluh-Unspunnen of the barons of Wädenswil, who had sold the Sefinental to the Augustinian priory of Interlaken in 1240. The priory expanded its sphere of influence by acquiring proprietorships, valley estates, Alps and jurisdictions. The Lauterbrunnen valley was under the control of the monasteries economically, legally and, as part of the parish of Gsteig near Interlaken, also ecclesiastically. The valley people of Lauterbrunnen built their own church in the years 1487 to 1488 without monastic permission. In 1669 the plague raged in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Starting from Wengen, 360 of the 580 people who inhabited the valley at that time died within four months. During his second trip to Switzerland in 1779, the Staubbach Falls inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to write his Singing of the Spirits over the Waters, which he wrote as a guest in the vicarage in Lauterbrunnen. On 12. On April 1, 2007, a German Armed Forces Tornado fighter plane crashed south of Lauterbrunnen on the north face of the Äbeni Flue, killing the pilot and injuring the weapons systems officer. In 1487, the valley dwellers built their first church without permission from the parish of Gsteig, to which it belonged. They were actively supported by their relatives in the Lötschental. Already the Lötscher bell was cast five years before construction began. The bell, weighing 200 kilograms, was then carried over the Wetterlücke on foot. When the old church was demolished in 1830, the shoring was found with which this transport was managed. The bell was damaged at the lower edge because it probably had to be dragged on the particularly steep passages. Today it is in the valley museum.[8] Lauterbrunnen has been an independent parish since 1528, having long belonged to the parish of Gsteig near Interlaken.
